Plumbing in Brentry
Brentry sits between Henbury and Southmead, with Filton and its aerospace sites nearby and Cribbs Causeway a short drive to the north. It was developed during the twentieth century and today has a mix of private houses and former council homes, with small pockets of business along Charlton Road. One of its best-known buildings is Repton Hall, the former Brentry Hospital, which closed in 2000 and has been converted into apartments, with its listed grounds now known as Royal Victoria Park. The M5 is close by, and a short trip takes you to Henbury, Southmead or Westbury-on-Trym.
That range of homes brings a range of plumbing. Most twentieth-century houses here have been updated several times, with newer bathrooms, combi boilers and plastic pipe joined onto older copper. Each of those changes added joints, and joints are where most leaks start, especially where two different pipe materials meet. Apartments in converted buildings come with their own challenges, such as long pipe runs, shared soil stacks, and access that sometimes has to be agreed with neighbours or a management company. Across all of them, hard water from Bristol Water steadily builds up limescale in shower heads, taps and toilet fill valves. Washing machines and dishwashers add to the load on kitchen waste pipes, and a slow-draining sink is often the first sign that a waste pipe needs clearing. Left alone, the build-up of grease and scale tends to get worse until the sink stops draining altogether.
Common Brentry jobs
- Leaks where old copper meets newer plastic pipe
- Showers with low flow or uneven temperature
- Blocked basins, baths and toilets
- Cold spots in radiators and sticking valves
- Washing machine and dishwasher connections
Hard water and your fittings
Limescale is one of the most common causes of the small problems we fix in north Bristol. It narrows shower heads, wears out tap cartridges and stops toilet fill valves closing properly, so cisterns keep running. Descaling shower heads now and then helps. When a fitting has been worn down by scale, replacing the part is usually quicker and cheaper over time than repeated cleaning. See our pages on shower problems and taps and toilets for more. If you have a dishwasher that isn’t draining, our page on whether plumbers repair dishwashers explains what we can and can’t help with.

Brentry plumbing questions
Do you work in converted apartment buildings?
Yes. We’ll work on the plumbing inside your apartment and let you know if a problem is in shared pipework that the management company needs to sort out.
Can you help with a shower that’s lost pressure?
Yes. It’s often limescale, a worn valve or a supply problem. If it’s an electric shower, the electrical side needs an electrician.
