Same water, different houses

Wherever you are in Bristol, your water comes from Bristol Water, now part of South West Water, and your sewerage is handled by Wessex Water. Bristol Water classes its supply as moderately hard to very hard, so limescale is a common problem across the city.

What changes from area to area is the housing. Clifton and Cotham have Georgian and Victorian houses, many split into flats. Bishopston, Easton, Bedminster and Southville have Victorian and Edwardian terraces with shared drains. Horfield, Henleaze and Fishponds have interwar and post-war homes, and Filton has new builds. Each brings its own typical plumbing jobs, which is why we’ve written a page for each area.

Who looks after which pipe?

Across the city the rules are the same. Bristol Water owns the supply pipe up to the boundary stop tap, usually in the pavement. From there into the house, it’s the owner’s responsibility. For drains, anything serving only your property inside your boundary is yours, while shared drains and sewers have belonged to Wessex Water since October 2011. When you call, we’ll help you work out whose problem it is before anyone spends money.
