Do this first
- Turn off the stop tap. It’s usually under the kitchen sink, where the supply pipe comes up. Turn it clockwise. In older terraces it’s sometimes under the stairs or under a floorboard by the front door.
- Stay clear of electrics. If water is near sockets or light fittings, switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely. Don’t touch anything wet that’s plugged in.
- Drain the pipes. Open the cold taps and flush the toilets to empty what’s left in the system.
- Call 0117 239 1217. Tell us what’s happening and whether you’ve managed to stop the water.
What counts as an emergency?
- A burst or split pipe, including one split by frost
- Water coming through a ceiling or a light fitting
- A leak you can’t stop at an isolation valve
- A toilet or drain overflowing into the house
- A stop tap that won’t turn, so you can’t shut the water off
- Your only toilet blocked or out of action
If it can safely wait, we’ll say so. Sometimes the right move is to turn off one isolation valve and book a normal visit later the same day.
How fast can you get here?
For genuine emergencies, we aim to be with you within the hour, 7 days a week. Bristol traffic and how busy we are both play a part, so we’ll give you an honest arrival time when you call. There’s no extra charge for emergency work in our working hours, no call-out fee, and no VAT.
After the water is off
Ceilings that have taken water can sag and hold it. If you see a bulge, keep everyone out of the room below. Move furniture and rugs out of the wet, open windows, and take photos before you start clearing up, because your insurer will want them. Many home insurance policies cover escape of water, so call yours early. Some want to be told before repair work starts.
Smell gas? That isn’t a plumbing emergency. Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Questions
Do you charge more for emergencies?
No. Within our hours, emergency work is charged at our normal rates, with no call-out fee and no VAT.
My stop tap won’t turn. What should I do?
Don’t force it with a wrench, because old stop taps can snap. Call us. If there’s an isolation valve near the leak, a quarter-turn with a flat-head screwdriver may stop that section.
Do you cover the whole of Bristol for emergencies?
Yes, all of Bristol and nearby areas such as Filton and Kingswood. We’re based on Stokes Croft, near the city centre.
